“What are the 5 must have items for this summers wardrobe?”

Here’s a legitimate sartorial inquiry made by a fellow follower; Mr. Drew. All these questions about relationships and the “consistency of my hair” have been getting a little redundant… and a little boring to be honest with you lol. So here goes;

I usually don’t like to read articles saying this and that are “must-haves” so I will just say that these are things I consider to be more or less essential to my personal wardrobe.

1. Deconstructed blazer

image

There will always be occasions where you need to  “dress up” a bit. As much as I love dressing down and throwing on a snapback, A Sunday brunch with friends and family will call for something a little more…. appropriate. A fully lined blazer is way too much for the Summer heat, especially in NYC so pick up a deconstructed blazer in a thin, breathable cotton, or even linen. Stay cool.

2. [Colorful] Khakis

image

I know in the last few months, you’ve seen me wearing mostly black, or monochromatic colors, but in the warmer months I like wearing a good amount of color. (If you go back enough on the WIWT pages, you will see some examples). Make sure the colorful pants you get are made from a thin cotton fabric so you don’t walk around with colorful swamp-ass all day.

3. Shades

image

A nice pair of shades not only compliments your outfit, but has some health benefits as well. Most designs come with a polarized lens option and I think it’s actually worth the extra few bucks to get the polarized option. ie; UV rays (if you’ve seen Day After Tomorrow, you know what’s up).

4. Fresh sneakers

image

I LOVE the warmer months only for the fresh sneakers I get to wear. With a copious amount of foot powder, going sans socks is the best feeling when you’ve got awesome breathable shoes like the Nike Flyknit Trainers. I also love my True White Vans and Tretorns. Just make sure if you’re part of the #sweatycrew like I am, to powder them real nice, because it’s really hard to get that stank out once it gets absorbed into the shoe.

5. Chambray shirt

image

Again… it’s gonna be real hot in the summer and you need everything to breathe well. A chambray shirt will go a long way in the warmer months; I really love wearing mine with a pair of white jeans or khakis.

Here’s a bonus;

Murad // Oil-control Mattifier with SPF 15

On top of being in the #sweatycrew, I also tend to get oily in my T-zone and this thing helps keep me oil-free for a good 8-12hours. If you’re gonna be in the sunlight all day, it’s not cool to walk around shining light into everyone’s eyes with your oily face. Also, it has SPF15… which isn’t a lot, but better than nothing. You can also apply even more SPF on top of this.

Ludlow blazer with center vent in Italian wool

Every guy needs a navy blazer* and since you can never ever find a Ludlow blazer on sale, this is kind of a big deal.

*I’m not always about that Supreme and Jordans you know… sometimes I do have grown-up things to attend to and I wear blazers too.

hellooo first off, i'd like to say that i love your blog. you seem like a really genuine guy and have a really well developed personality as well as a sense of who you are as a person. anyways, my main inquiry is that im a senior in highschool and am going off to college next year. what kind of clothes do you recommend for a classy look similar to your own for college and beyond? please be as specific as possible :DD thanks

As always, check the #essentials.

For college, i’d say keep it simple and keep it clean. On a student’s budget, I’d pick up a pair of selvedged denim from GAP.

image

I’ve been hearing that the “new” ones are of lesser quality but I have one from a year ago and they’ve held up just fine. If you can fit nicely into their skinny, there’s no need to taper them and since they come in different lengths, you can save the cost of hemming.

Then there’s my favorite basic sweatshirt from Levi’s which is ridiculously cheap now, there’s absolutely no reason NOT to get it.

image

Goes well with just about anything and it’s such a timeless design that it will last you throughout your undergrad, and if you wanna get crazy, through your graduate school years too.

To go along with these basics, you need a basic pocket tee from J. Crew.

image

For tees, they’re a bit on the pricey side, but if you use a student discount, and I believe if you purchase multiples, there is a bigger discount. I would suggest; the faded black and heather grey. These are super soft and they’ve lasted me a few years, and I think they look/feel better after each wash.

You’ll also need a few dress shirts for more “formal” occasions. Like a date. Check these out.

Then for sneakers on campus, you can’t go wrong with Vans Authentics.

image

You can never go wrong with the True Whites, or if you wanna be bold, you can go for the Fiery Red/Black.

For bags, it really depends if you want the traditional pack, or a messenger bag, or a tote. Personal preference, but check out some bags here.

Outwear is going to be pricey no matter what, and for good reason. If you invest in a good quality outerwear, it will last.

image

It’s sold out online, but check out some J. Crew stores and look for the Authentic Baysweater Peacoat. The one with thinsulate is crazy warm, but not like an oven. I’ve worn a heattech base layer and the bayswater out in the city in some frigit temperatures and I was fine. A well fitting peacoat should last you many years. Just make sure you dryclean it during the off season and store it properly.

Can’t really think of anything else off the top of my head but if you need suggestions on particular items, let me know.

I hope that helps.

I never bought shirts with collars before. What do you recommend me to buy for my first 4 shirts. links would be nice! and I'm also on a budget. thank you!

Well without knowing your budget I’ll just throw you three brands and why you should consider them.

Land’s End Canvas $44

LES uses pretty good fabric for their oxford. They will last you quite a while, as long as you aren’t rolling around in the dirt in them and whatnot. But the shirts are affordable, and of decent quality. The shirt isn’t extra long so you can wear it casually untucked. If this is your first collared shirt, you probably want to be comfortable in it, and wearing an oxford untucked is as cozy as you can get without wearing a snuggy.

J. Crew $69.50 (student discount 20% off)

One of my favorite oxfords. Quality is good and the dying processed used in these J. Crew shirts make it really one of a kind. It’s really hard to find this shade of blue and it really does look “vintage.” Price is a bit high, but my oxfords from J.Crew are still in perfect condition and my oldest one is 6 years old now. The 6 year old one actually started to fray a tiny bit at the cuffs and it looks so nice. Also, with the student discount it’s a pretty good deal.

image

50/50 Supply Co. $130 ($35 off with code SAVE2013)

A bit on the pricey side but this is one of those shirts that you’ll want to take care of. Sometimes when I’m wearing my LES or J.Crew oxfords and I pass by a park I will hop on the court to ball with some kids and just absolutely wipe the floor with them AND take their juice boxes too… damn kids… but when I’m wearing this shirt, I’d actually prefer to take it off and hang it on a tree to let everyone marvel at it while I ball. This blue oxford is of really good quality. Construction is done well, made in the US and it’s got a very unique camo pattern that’s only visible when you want it. Perfect for those who want to show a little flair but don’t want to really be a jerkstore peacocking fool. The shirt is a tiny bit longer than the J. Crew oxford so you can wear it tucked in just as easily as you can wear it untucked.

I hope that helps.
